Hanging Gardens of Babylon

September 18th, 2009

The second wonder of the ancient world had almost two hundred years less than the Pyramid of Cheops. Hanging Gardens of Babylon were composed of seven terraces of stone slabs and beams placed on the ceiling of a basement. Since the terraces were at 5 m above one to another they create the impression of huge stairs. Entrance to the garden gives the impression that you climb a hill, while parts of the structure seemed to leave one of the other. There were plenty of fruit and flowers, exotic animals, trees of all kinds which were a rare beauty.
Thus, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon were an unique architectural plan and also has a unique irrigation system which consists of canals, small lakes, water games, deep wells. The 7 floors of the garden were linked by ornamental woven .
hanging-gardens-of-babylonGardens of ancient Babylon included some botanical wonders. The enormous garden was not a palace, but contained the first collection of plants in the world. The Creator, King Nebuchadnezzar, have told to his soldiers to remove carefully during the numerous campaign, all unknown plants that they found abroad and send them soon.
Caravans and ships brought to Babylon always new plants .They also exists some descriptions of these great gardens. It is said that the monarch had given to his wife these first botanical gardens, a Persian princess, for that, in the monotonous environment of Mesopotamia, to be able to entertain herself during prolonged absent of her husband. Queen name is unknown. We will probably never know why they were given the name “Hanging Gardens of Babylon”.
Semiramis, queen of Assyria, is well known by historians, but she lived long before and would rather have had the idea to achieve such a garden. Semiramis has remained not only in the history of art, but also that of mankind, because of her courage and bravery who surpassed them, it seems, those of her husband, Nebuchadnezzar. Semiramis, who tied her name for eternity of Hanging Gardens, was Queen of Assyria and Babylon.
Archaeological excavations have revealed the place where was situated the palace of Babylon, and a building next to it, with high vaults , thick walls and an irrigation system. A group of archaeologists say that this building, situated in the south of the palace, is in fact the hanging gardens.

Summer Garden from St. Petersburg

September 14th, 2009

Summer Garden in St. Petersburg was founded in 1704 by order of Tsar Peter the Great who also was personally involved in its plan. Strict geometrical principles are specific to the Dutch baroque style, paths are symmetrical, the trees have perfect shapes, the wells are important focal points. The plan originally belongs to Leblon. In the garden we find statues of marble brought from Europe and of course especially rare flowers and impressive fountains. It was originally created for the nobility of the court that organized here balls, outdoors parties . Also in the summer garden is located and the summer palace of Tsar Peter I, built by the great Italian architect Domenico Trezzini.

In 1777 the garden suffered major floods and many statues and fountains were destroyed. The garden gardensummerwas rebuilt after the initial plan. Today alleys are flanked by statues of 79 Italian sculptors Pietro Boratta, Bozzazza, Marino Gropelli, Alvise Tagliapietra, who lived in 17th and 18th centuries. The statues have mythological themes, representing gods and heroes of antiquity. The initial number of statues were 200 and in the 20 century 90 of the statues that survived were placed inside buildings and the alleys of the park were located with modern replicas.

In the garden there is a huge fence designed by architect Yury Felten in 1773-1786. The wrought iron separate the Palace Square park. Fence has 36 granite columns decorated with urns, vases and it is impressive by the harmony of proportions, elegance and simplicity In the garden was also built the “coffee house” designed by Carlo Rossi in 1826, and” tea house” built by Ludwig Charlemagne in 1827. Coffee house was built on a grottoes created by Andreas Schlüter and Georg-Johann Mattarnovi in 1820.

A very famous statue is the statue of Russian fabulist Krylov Ilya, built in 1855 by Pyotr Klodt. The statue is decorated with a bas-relief on the themes in the story writer. Another important statue is the nymph Flora, of white marble designed by an unknown artist in the 18th century. A special attraction is a fountain with scenes from Aesop’s fable, which is the oldest fountain in Russia. Initially a special mechanism was brought from England, which unfortunately was damaged during the floods of 1777.
Summer Garden in St. Petersburg has a dark history that in May 1866 Dmitry Karakozov tried to assassinate Czar Alexander the second, when he was walking on the footpath. To remind the lucky tsar was built a chapel. It was demolished by the Bolsheviks after the October Revolution. The garden appears in the poems of Alexander Pushkin, in the areas of Tchaikovsky, poems Block, etc.. If initially was not open to ordinary people, can now be visited by anyone. Garden has two main entrances and is open to the public between 10 o’clock and 9 pm.

Benefits of tomatoes

September 8th, 2009

The tomato, Solanum lycopersicum, originates from South America. The first tomato ripped about three thousand years ago under the hot sun of the Peruvian Andes. The first people who have grown this plant in their gardens were the Maya people, and this crop of tomatoes was also spread, reaching today that tomatoes to be known all over the world. The tomato is a herbaceous plant, annual, which grows in temperate climate zones of the world.
tomatoesTomatoes are one of the main crop of garden vegetables, both because of relatively easy cultivation and for its fruit, which is a very valuable food that contains meaningful amounts of nutritious substances. In one kilograms of tomatoes are found about 30-40 g sugar, 20-60 grams of vitamin A, vitamin C 20-60 g, 40-50 mg calcium, 20-30 mg of iron.
Tomatoes require more light, especially shelter and greenhouses. They need more food, so they must be planted in fertile soil, natural fertilizer gradually being gained.
Tomatoes grow more by seedling, although it can grow with good results and by direct seeding in the field. Sprout early crop occurs in warm seedbeds , when they are sowed in February. At 2-3 weeks after they come out , when showing the first true leaves, prick out the landing distance of 10/10 cm if you want to get a vigorously sprout and have enough space. Better results may be obtained from the nests or pots frequently fertilized . For summer crops, seeding in the seedbeds is made at the beginning of March. When the danger of late spring hoarfrost passed , from mid-April and by May, you can plant tomatoes in the garden.
How to care for your tomatoes
Tomatoes must be attached by stakes The work is done as the bushes are charged with fruit and become heavier. Binding is done with string, strips of cloth or other textile material, just below the leaves surrounding the stem so that to be enough place to grow fruit.
Breaking shoots raised in primary leaves, is made as soon as they appear, for good fruit development. You can leave the bush sprouts from those that occur near the first cluster of fruit, to increase production.
Watering .It is made at 6-7 days, depending on the degree of dryness of the land. Spring and early summer, tomatoes are wet in the morning, because the land gets warm during the day, and so the plants don’t suffer of cold during the night. During summer, the watering is made in the evening and at night when the soil is cooler. The watering must be done so it can reach the plant roots and not directly on the plant, and the water don’t have to be cold, but be left in the sun to warm up a bit. The land should be fertilize once at 10-15 days from planting seedlings, then at 2 weeks. For this purpose is appropriate to use natural fertilizers such as animal manure (manure bucket 1 thins with water buckets 5), 10-15 liters per 1 sq m, or compost, which is spread among plants and buried in the soil by cultivation.

Benefits of tomatoes
Studies conducted on thousands of consumer revealed the benefits of this plant on the human body, and the results are amazing. The vitamins which tomatoes contain ones are vitamin A (important for eye and endocrine processes), B complex (B1, B2, B5, B6 – protecting the nervous system, skeletal system, metabolism), vitamin C (necessary cardiovascular system, nervous system and endocrine), vitamin E (vitamin of youth and fertility) and vitamin K (important for the synthesis of certain figurative elements of blood). Then, tomatoes contain large amounts of potassium, phosphorus, iron, calcium, magnesium and selenium, and organic acids, the last one having an important role in the digestive system. Also, the tomato is the richest natural source of lycopene, a substance which gives the red color . Unfortunately the lycopene cannot be produced by the human body, so the only source is the diet.

Organic gardening

August 25th, 2009

Organic gardening often includes a number of ways to improve the quality of garden soil with natural organic substances. Among others, this type of gardening aims to build an ecosystem where plants are sufficiently resistant to pests and diseases. Even if the chemicals are widely used in gardening, interest in organic gardening is increasing. Why? There are several reasons.
First of all remaining pesticides on fruit and vegetables have sometimes seriously affected the health of consumers. In addition, many people consider organic gardening as a way to protect the environment. Some pests have become immune to chemical pesticides having been applied repeatedly, which led scientists to find new toxic substances that are dangerous. These powerful chemicals entered the groundwater and pollute our precious water sources.
Another advantage of organic gardening is that the waste storage pits will throw less trash. Remnantsorganic-gardening of food and garden waste is a big part of our garbage. Instead of being discarded, the organic remains can be collected and left to decay, resulting in compost, a natural fertilizer. It might not be so nice idea to get such a fertilizer, but for a plant it is a delight!
Finally, some believe that organic gardening is an opportunity to move, to enjoy the sunshine, working the land and watch seeds turn into little healthy plants.
Soil is very important because it provides to the environment what plants need to grow. Feed it with manure, humus, garbage, grass, dry leaves etc.. This organic mixture will function as a permanent revitalizing soil, and hence the plant. It is advisable to test your soil before you decide what kind of fertilizer will feed your soil. This step is good for plants: for example, nitrogen, nutrient beneficial for healthy leaf, can be harmful if it exists in soil in a big quantity . Some secondary plants in symbiosis with nitrogen fixing bacteria can feed the soil so that it is sufficiently healthy for plants. Other necessary plant nutrient, found in animal manure phosphorus and potassium are beneficial for root growth, the bulbs, ensuring the health of the entire plant. Also, the soil should be rich in calcium, magnesium, zinc.
To combat pests in the garden and some plants you can use certain plants . Plants were grown near plants that need protection to avoid pests. For example, nematodes, which attack the roots of many plants, causing them to dry, are very careful to stay away from marigolds . And cabbage butterflies don’t go near the cabbage and around if you grow rosemary, sage or thyme. A practical method for pest and diseases is crop rotation. Instead grown year after year the same type of plant in the same place, it would be good to do a rotation of plants that grown in the garden. In this way you stop the cycle of disease and pest infestation.
Organic gardening can be a difficult task that requires time and patience. To bring the soil in a healthy state turning to organic it is a process that take several months.
